FEATURED STORY
14 year old Sam Schlobohm has participated in the seven week summer program twice. “Since I started at BUGS, I’ve been much more aware of what I’ve been eating and I eat more healthy foods. I’ve also started my own garden plot at home.”
Sam’s mom: “Sam has also become more aware of what we buy at the grocery store and where it comes from, both packaged foods and produce. He got up early most Saturday mornings to make sure we went to the Capitol City Market to buy locally. He really took ownership of the food that came into our house and into our mouths.”

The Boise Urban Garden School (BUGS) uses organic gardening to engage students, teachers and community members in issues of ecology, local food economies, sustainability, nutrition, health and literacy. The garden is an authentic learning environment that empowers students through inquiry and problem solving, which in turn, stimulates critical thinking and nurtures community action.

The BUGS summer program provides youth with an alternative to a world of instant gratification, fast food, fast travel, and consumerism. BUGS teaches youth the value of the natural world, patience, perseverance, and responsibility for themselves, their community and the planet, and empowers them to make their world a better place. |
